My receiver wont recognize my mp3 player

I bought a pioneer elite sc-61 and the usb port won't recognise my Sony mp3 player

The usb in the receiver is probably designed to work with ubs memory sticks and hard drives not mp3 players. If there is a way in the Sony to put it in usb drive mode it might work. Otherwise you will need to connect it with an audio cable or use a dock with audio outputs.
