Hey guys, I have a very annoying (and persistent) issue with my HP laptop...

So yesterday, I booted it up as normal, and the keyboard didn't work. I got no response from pressing ANY of the keys, so I could not enter my password to login. This has never occurred before. I hit ESC as it booted up again to see if I could use the keyboard before it booted to get into the Setup window, so I could get into BIOS, system recovery, etc.

This did not work (still absolutely no response from any key presses). Fast forward to today. I tried it again and this time it worked. I was able to get into BIOS and found that the arrows keys as well as the WASD and Function keys all worked just fine, indicated it was not a hardware issue.

However, the keyboard still did NOT work (as described above) properly when I got passed the Windows Logo. I read somewhere on another forum that by uninstalling the default keyboard driver in Device Manager and then rebooting the computer would FIX this. I followed the instructions but this did not fix the issue.

Normally, this would be a simple fix; I could just go HP's website and download the drivers right? Not anymore. In place of ALL the drivers they used to offer (I used this site before to fix some AMD GPU drivers on the same laptop - shocker, right?) they now only have ONE option; I can click "Learn More about Windows Updates"...

So I go to check for updates (thinking I need one), and Windows 10 is already up to date, meaning I can do nothing. I have not recently updated Win10 either, so what gives? On top of that (making matters so much more confusing than they needed to be) the next time I turned on my laptop, the keyboard was working just fine! And now the touchpad doesn't work!!! What gives??? Now they keep randomly switching back and forth, sometimes neither will work, but I never get lucky enough to have both working when I boot up.

Is there any way to resolve this? I appreciate any and all help!

Sounds like a physical defect. Re-seat the keyboard connections, if that does not help, a new keyboard is pretty cheap (last one I got for a laptop was $15 and worked great). Just look around for a good price, the replacements on ebay should work fine, and would be much less than buying one directly from HP.
Hi,

Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help.
- Start by doing a hard reboot, remove the battery and unplug its AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds then boot it back up then test it again.
- If it doesn't work for troubleshooting purposes connect an external USB mouse and keyboard.
- If both device will work normally I would suggest reinstalling Windows 10 first.
- Here's how to run a complete factory reset with your laptop.

- If after the factory reset and the same problem will persist I would suggest contacting HP for a repair if it's still under the factory warranty.
