Need new speakers for older stereo system

We have a 30 year old stereo system and we need new speakers. I was told at Best Buy that speakers no longer plug directly into the receiver. You now need an amplifier to make the speakers work. Is this true and is there any way around it? Thanks!

No, not true by normal definitions. A receiver usually includes at least an FM tuner, a pre-amplifier, and a power amplifier.

Can you post the exact model and part number of your receiver?

Also, if you include some idea of how much you want to spend, I'm sure people will have suggestions for speakers.

Receivers have not changed, even in 30 years. The "salesmen" at Best Buys probably are trying to "up-sell" you.
