I have a netbook with a VGA (TV) out that I'd like to hook up to a TV. Problem is neither TV has a VGA input, only component, s-video or HDMI.

From what I've read, it sounds like my only option is some kind of converter box that will take the VGA signal and turn it into 1 of the 3 input types the TV's support like: http://www.amazon.com/Lkv350-VGA-Hdmi-Converter-Sunvalleytek/dp/B004RDDDC8, which is somewhat expensive for the use it will be getting. Seems like once you're spending $40-$100 you might as well just get a dedicated media streaming box.

Can anyone confirm if a converter is the only option? What makes me wonder if a straight VGA to s-video or component or HDMI cable would work is:

Just can't find any info on what exacly the 'TV out' on this netbook supports.

Netbook is a Certified Data model U10IL1, which isn't terribly useful information. It uses the intel mobile 945 express chipset.

TV's are

Sony Wega KDE37XS955
Samsung PN50B430P2D

VGA to S video would work, but it will have a horrible picture quality. That converter type box works, I use a similar model to run an older laptop to an HDMI TV. I'd look around for a different device though, the one you looked did not have very good ratings. Although that may be from people who don't know how to use the thing.

You can't just use a cable to go from VGA to HDMI, you need an active converter. Or get a Roku or something.
