newbie question(s)

Hey everyone,

sorry if there's a FAQ that answers this, I couldn't locate it. But, I have
a chance at getting a free, and as I understand it, fully equipped c-band(?)
satellite dish. It's mostly for a rural part of Idaho, where there's no
cable, and I just would like to get some channels for free (if at all
possible).

Is this even possible?

Do you need a provider for the rest of "cable"? If so, how much should one
expect to pay for one?

Should I expect this to just be a pain in the tuchas? I don't know more
about the dish, I haven't gotten it yet, but free is a good price.

Yes, there are still some free channels on C-band, such as Tech TV,
C-Span and C-Span 2, PBS, NASA TV, MTV2, and occasional entertainment
and sports programs being transmitted to local TV stations.

It depends on what subscription channels you'd like to receive. I
subscribe to a programming package for about $15 per month (no premium
movie channels in my subscription).

Analog C-band is pretty simple. It gets more complicated if you want
to go digital. Since it's free, give it a shot and see what happens.

all I really want it for is some news, and decent sports (within reason).

yah, I looked into that today, and dayam, they are cheap!

does it matter how old the dish is? I actually have a shot at a 2nd free
dish (not sure how big the 2nd one is) and one is probably a fair amount
newer. The older one is 83, and I'm fairly certain it's junk. not only
because it's broken to begin with, it didn't survive the trip home very
well. And daaaayam, the thing is huge.

the 2nd one I was talking about, is actually in 1 piece, where the one I got
today was in several pieces. I dont know if I can get it back together (if
it's worth it) so I might just junk it...unless someone wants it in the
Portland area, and doesn't mind it being a bit dented, and not "together"
(electrically).
