no log on but connected

i was given a older acer laptop that had been reset to factory default when set up for wifi unit connect and downloaded updates and such but when i try to log on internet explorer says links broken i know connection is good to receave updates but i can not log on???

How are you trying to connect? and is the message coming from your computer itself, or the program you are trying to connect through.

the computer it downloads updates but will not log on any site saying link is broken have only ie on windows 7

So you are using IE. ok. Downloading updates means it is connected. Does your computer itself say it is connected? Not through IE. But in control panel and networking
