Outlook 2016 Deleted email dont go to trash-the disappear forever

I am deleting emails but instead of going to trash they just disappear forever. The previous laptop had outlook 2016 and it moved the to trash but now they are gone forever. Any ideas where in the config this might be happening?

It's probably a setting on the deleted folder, as to how quickly it clears itself, but surely the point in deleting the emails is that they get deleted. Do not use the deleted box for storage.

the goal is to hit delete then be able to go back later to recover if something was deleted by mistake. The emails are permanently deleted immediately when delete is pushed. i will check into the setting for the folder but if you have other ideas please share. thanks for the quick reply.

Everything I'm reading has shift+delete as being perm delete.

turns out that the settings in outlook for this gmail account were set to delete permanently. i got it fixed. thanks anyway.
