The issue of annoyingly, lifeless, over-compressed CDs pops up all too
often in this NG.

I think it's about time we stop complaining and actually do something to
fight back.

As we all know, our business is a buzzword-driven one. So all we need to
do is coin a new buzzword to describe the un-squashed sound we all love,
and spread the word.

Cancel that, you don't even need to invent one, because I just did!!!
And the Buzzword is:

"Cinematic Sound"

Like, you know, when you're at the cinema and the dialog is at a certain
volume, and, you know, a sound effect comes in and it's like
***BOOOM***, like, you know, just big, much much louder than the rest
and it grabs your attention big time because there's this sudden level
change that just leaves you breathless, know what I mean?

Well, this is how a great mastering engineer can get a CD to sound... He
can give you that "Cinematic Sound", with lots of difference between the
quiet parts and the loud ones!

Yes sir, we FINALLY have the technology to do that!! This is truly
exciting stuff!!!

Mastering engineers, be sure to charge extra for your new "Cinematic
Sound" service!

"Yeah we can do both: either the usual CD sound or Cinematic Sound, for
just a couple hundred dollars extra".

If the buzzword catches on, we can form a committee, make up a logo and
license it for a fee (CDs on which the logo shall appear _must_ have an
average RMS level of -12dB or lower).

A standard writing will be included saying something like: "This disc is
compatible with all existing CD players. To fully appreciate Cinematic
Sound (TM), this CD should be played at a slightly louder volume than
standard CDs. Please check your equipment's user manual on how to raise
the volume".

Trust me, we can build a whole business on this!! Before you know, the
labels will be releasing their CDs remastered with "Cinematic Sound"!

Cinematic Sound will save the whole industry, not to mention the f@#*ing
music!!!

What might help is if on the typical home sterio an adjustable compression
became as standard and accessable as the eq. Once people can control it
they'll appreciate having something that lets them mash the hell out of it
(and most will just max it and forget about it). But they'll appreciate
product that responds to their 'improvements' and the result will be CD with
a little breathing room for those who want it.

Yep, this is what a lot of people are hoping for. Put it on the
computers too. Thing is, it's going to take a long time for it to be
in everybody's home & car.

I am having horrible visions of everyonr running CD's through maxed out
sub-3630 compressors.

I think it would be more of a DSP type of thing, digital brickwall
limiter ala L2 style.

And what's better, that...or having to actually print it on the
master? Life ain't perfect.

What's better is hearing it how it was supposed to sound. This of course
means forsaking the car, turning it up and actually listening.

But it's not going to get into every player consistantly. Then some
manufs will add optional makeup gain to bring it back to the same peak
levels, so people can make it 'louder'. That will then become the 'must
have' function with some fancy marketing name, and then you have a whole
world of sound munging boxes to fight with, and the sound will have
completely lost the fight.
