Hello. I recently changed my HDD (over a month though) and it has been doing just fine, off course there would be this issue and that. But the focus of my post is a recent problem I encountered while surfing the net and browsing some files: the Optical Drive gave a sound and upon checking, only 'C:/', 'DVD RW DRIVE (D:/)' were present and 'CD Drive (E:/)' was missing (all of this, though there wasn't a disc inside the drive was baffling); PC suddenly turned blue with some white-black horizontal lines moving up, just like on an unset TV; it continued until I force-shutdown the thing and after some seconds when I tried to power it on, the power light flashed once and was off again but the optical drive kept flickering as it does when a DVD/CD is inserted.
I checked the HDD and RAM to see if it they were hot, but warmth degree was negligible-the RAM was even less- then next I checked the screen cable but found it connected. After fixing everything back and pressing the power key, the PC was on again?!
Session was lost but it was working again. This morning upon pressing the power key again I was able to work on my computer until it repeated the blue-screen.... I can't remember if I forced it to shutdown, but I was able to use it after some minutes.
Note: The blue screen wasn't a BSOD as it was purplish and not purely blue, and darker too.
-The missing 'CD Drive E:/' occasionally presented itself when I checked 'Computer' and Optical Drive light would flicker, but this is the time everything would stop.
-After turning on the PC, 'Opera' browser as I was using it, would 'glow' the desktop wallpaper as if it was set in transparency mode for short milliseconds and after about 5secs. would be back to normal.
-I have recently installed Puppy Linux (Slacko 6.3._) as a backup OS after checking it using a Live USB, so I could retrieve my files in case anything goes wrong with Windows. It might not be the problem, but I think its worth noting. And there's also a free 1022 or 1024 MB if free partition left after installing Puppy.
-I use Plop boot manager.
-RAM= 2GB.
-HDD= 500GB.
-Its a Windows 7, x32 bit PC.
HOPE THE DETAILS WOULD BE INFORMATIVE ENOUGH TO TROUBLESHOOT THE COMPUTER.

Solution
Only way to know for sure is swap out parts. Most shops have battery, HD, CD drive, spare power cord, memory, monitor to test. If none of those fix the problem then they know its the motherboard needing replacement.

OK. I've checked it and it didn't fix the problem. Sorry for late response; having a nearly-hard time getting to work on the PC. I'm in doubts as to the problem being driver-specific too.

Try making a Hiren's boot USB. Use this tool and its simple to make. Just select Hiren boot CD in step 2 and then your USB drive.

Then at start hit your boot menu function key or set bios to boot from USB. It should start into a windows xp gui. You have access to all kinds of test software to check every part. It should look like the image and if you click on the Hiren boot CD's programs you get a big drop down list.

You can click on hard drive/storage to scan you hard drive. Near the bottom of the list is testing that has programs totest your PC parts. It may have the drivers for your CD drive in device drivers.

You can change the back ground if you wish.

I found https://downloads.tomsguide.com/Hiren-s-Boot-CD,0301-51033.html
and https://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
But I'm afraid it [PC] would crash upon diagnosis. It barely keeps on/up for 5 minutes.

I'm sure its possibe with Rufus but it would leave you doing most of the setup work to get Hiren's config. The ideal with Hiren is to take the HD, sata, and windows out of stablity issue. Try to eliminate what not causing the issue to see what part must be replaced.

You would have to be a pro to do it that way. I struggled with that method of creating the boot drive. Trust me use the easy way with the pendrive software. Its just 1, 2, 3, and your done.

How do I achieve all of that? Does Hiren's Boot get copied to the RAM like (Puppy) Linux; is it possible to remove parts while its on so I can discern the 'black sheep'? I'm confused. Don't get it.

Once you have the Hiren boot drive made plug it into the system. Start the system and hit the function key for boot menu. You should have cd, hd, usb, and few others so select the USB. Hiren should load into the mini windows xp. The tests are strat foward like in the images posted.

You don't sound too sure.
Before I saw your message, I repeated the scan and it crashed after an hour, more or less; when I rebooted, I tried S&M too; it got over well with the CPU (scan) but crashed when it got to the 'Memiry' tab/section. This was after 25 minutes of scan time.

About the old HDD: what scans do I make after fixing it in?
When the whole problem started; when PC wouldn't start, results were same with the 'old HDD'. Name scan programmes, please.
Note: Optical Drive still on/attached to PC.
Used Victoria.... scanner today instead of HDD scan (old version).

Test the old HD to see if it also crashes the laptop. If it does then either both are bad or you have some more up the chain say on the motherboard SATA port issue. If it does work then that would clear the rest and more out to be your HD. So yup do the HDtune again with your old HD. On the memory that could be due to page file on your HD if you still had the new one in.
