Pioneer CLD-52 and AC-3 Problem

Friend gave me me a pristine Pioneer CLD-52...I pulled out my trusty
Sony 501 (with Digital Upgrade) and installed the Pioneer.
My amp is a SONY DA30ES and while the Sony LD passed the Ac-3 just
fine.. the Pioneer only passes Stereo through the Digital port
(either one -Optical/Coaxil)

Tried all the settings on both units....am I missing something?
Is CLD-52 not a AC-3 Unit?

In order to get AC-3 (dolby digital) from laserdisc, a dedicated AC-3
output called an RF output is required. The CLD 52 does not have an RF
output so it will not play dolby digital.

Yes it is, LD will not pass dolby digital (AC3) via fiber optic or
coaxil outputs. They will pass PCM stereo and DTS, but not dolby
digital.

DVD is a completely different animal than laserdisc. On DVD, the data
is stored in digital form, so it can be passed via a digital output.
On LD, Dolby digital is stored in RF modulated form, hence why an RF
demodulator is required to demodulate the RF signal into a digital
bitstream.

The CLD52 will NOT output dolby digital. It has no AC3, or RF output.
It will pass dolby surround encoded PCM stereo and DTS.

That is almost correct, but it should read "dolby digital 5.1"
and not simply "dolby digital".

That isn't true at all. An RF output is NOT
a requirement for Dolby Digital.

DVD players don't have RF outputs,
and they pass DD just fine,
via RCA-type coaxial and/or optical outputs.

The CLD-52 can pass DD PCM audio
from its coaxial or optical output jacks.
It just isn't 5.1.

You'll also need a demodulator to decode
a laserdisc players AC-3 output stream,
or a receiver capable of accepting the stream
and decoding it.

This might help

Hmmm, are you trying to say that LD is capable of storing non "RF
Modulated AC-3" Dolby Digital content? That would be news to me.

[Keep in mind, the focus here is Dolby Digital as it exists on LD, not
DVD]

I do understand that, but ou are talking about dolby digital on DVD.
It is quite different on laserdisc. Unless the track was DD 5.1, they
would have simply used the PCM digital tracks and made a dolby surround
encoded track. LD AC-3 was 5.1, or possibly 5.0 in some cases, but
there was no dolby digital 1.0 and such on laserdisc. There was no
need for it as they would just use the digital tracks instead.
Remember that the AC-3 is not in digital form on laserdisc but is RF
modulated and is stored in the right analog channel.

Now DVD is another matter and you're correct that DD can be anything
from 1.0 up.

I'm not trying to argue with you.

AC-3 is 5.1. Dolby Digital can be as low as ONE channel.

Which is basically what I said - I just didn't mention DTS.

That is where you are wrong. You just don't understand
that Dolby Digital is not exclusively AC-3 5.1.

Hugh, we're talking about AC-3 on LD's since this is an LD NG. And to my
knowledge there were no LD players that had anything more than an AC-3 RF
output, requiring an RF demodulator, either as a standalone unit or as part
of a higher end av reciever that had an AC-3 RF input....there is no such
thing as DD PCM either...
Please check your info, its confusing enough for people that dont know to
get flat out wrong info from someone else that seems confused.

I wasn't. I was (trying to) address the fact that LD players
have coaxial and/or optical outputs capable of digital output,
but not AC-3.

I obviously failed to even come close to making my point.

That was a careless mistake. I meant to type digital PCM.

I'll try to be more careful. Sorry.

Since PL is gone (i bought my sony MDP-500 module from them.) Will AC-3
RF module sent out for my sony work in my new Pioneer Pioneer CLD-52.

If it is the same...does anybody have the install directions for that unit.

Thanks.

So pleased with the picture on the 52...I am willing to butcher the Sony 500

Yes, that kit board works in any LD player.

If you bought it from Precisionlaserdisc then try
http://www.bde.de/index-bde.htm which is the European counterpart. They
might have a package they can get to you with instructions
