Pioneer LD CLD-D704 problem

I've been having a problem with my Pioneer CLD-D704 and wondered if
anyone on the group might have some advice for me?

The problem:

When inserting a 12" laser and pressing play, the disc will start to
spin up to speed. Just as it gets to what I think should be full speed
and might start to play, the motor powers down and the disc slowly
spins back down to a stop. This takes about 45 seconds to 1 minute.
Then once it stops, the player will allow you to eject it or try to
play it again.

It has had this problem for several months and I just quit using it.
But yesterday I thought I'd tear it open and see what I could discover.
To my surprise, it played both a CAV and a CLV LD yesterday with no
problems (double-sided disc worked as well). But today it wouldn't work
with the same discs, and had the same symptoms as above.

Today I did some browsing on this group and decided to try and clean
the upper and lower disc clamping mechanisms. I did get some black
stuff on the q-tips when cleaning (twice), but that didn't make any
difference.

It does play CDs just fine...

Any ideas on what this problem could be?

Is there a loud squeal when it tries to play the disc?

I have a 704, and I had the squealing problem, and towards the end it
also would start to spin up the disc and immediately spin back down.

I had it serviced by Duncan at http/www.laserdiscservice.com/ He
replaced the spindle motor and everything works like a champ now.

The player is having problems reading the Table Of Contents. This could be
either a pickup or electronics issue. Hard to say which. In my repairs
this has been attributed to the electronics more than the pickup.

Just out of curiosity, what does it cost (parts/labor) to replace a
spindle motor? A friend (and former poster here) recently gave me his
CLD-99 after it developed this problem - very loud squeal whenever you
try to play a disc. I figured it was probably the spindle motor, and
thought that since it was a CLD-99, it would be worth fixing - I can
always use another backup player for my CLD-97.

The squeal can actually be one of two items, spindle motor which is around
$50 parts or the bearing/button with the top part of the clamp. So if the
player works fine otherwise it is definitely worth fixing.

There is not a loud squeal when trying to play the disc. The player
does make what I would call a "Normal" sound that I've thought of as
the laser pickup getting into position, but that's a pretty low level
sound...

The Table of Contents theory sounds interesting....It does play other
formats correctly, though, which is puzzling to me.....

As Kurtis says it sounds like it's not reading the TOC. Or it's just
not getting up to speed and sync locking within the logic's timeout
interval. It could still be slipping on the motor spindle even if
it's not making a significant noise. With the top off you can tell
it's slipping by hearing the "hissing" sound of the spindle slipping
within the disc hole and the disc not really coming up to speed. It
may be wobbling due to a bad spindle bearing. If the problem is
electronics, Focus gain or motor servo for example, then sometimes
even if the TOC is not read nor the servo locked then the disc can be
made to play by scanning forward when the disc seems to be up to
speed. This works on the D703 for discs with bad laserrot at the
beginning thus obscuring the TOC. The D703 WILL play discs without a
TOC after a minute or more, but that doesn't account for the disc
slowing down and stopping again.
