I don't know if you are speaking of included with a new notebook, or
purchase one to install internally in a notebook. The answer to both is yes.
You can buy an Gateway 7405GX which comes with a 8x DVD+-RW for $1250. You
can buy an internal DVD+-RW to add to some notebooks for $120 or less.
External should also be a consideration if looking to add one.

Perhaps in the 7.5lb Gateway desktop replacement behemoth that you mentioned
in another post.

But for any of the new PentiumM sub 5lb notebooks that are limited to the
9.5mm ultra-slim optical drives, the max speed is 2X so far. Plus, they cost
a ridiculous amount of money for what you get and are usually only +R.

That is an industry standard 9.5mm slim drive that is in that notebook, as
is the 4x DVD-burner that came in my notebook.

Sorry, it's a 12.5mm slim drive (probably 12.7mm actually) in the subject
Gateway and the "industry standard" is also 12.5mm.

9.5mm optical drives are considered ultra-slim. AFAIK there's only one 9.5mm
optical burner available in the US to date and that's the
Matsushita/Panasonic UJ-812.

Oops my bad. was thinking of industry standard hard drives.At any rate, yes
they are available for most notebooks, not expensive, and at speeds up to at
least 8x. Without knowing OP's notebook model, I guess we don't know if he
can get one cheap or not. I suppose they would be considered very high end
for the ultra slim notebooks since they are not intended to do any kind of
video editing/recording in the first place.

And most other notebooks. The exception is the non-statndard ultra lights.

Agreed, but again, OP didn't designate he needed one of the new ultra slim
drives. He simply asked if they were available for notebooks.
