SD card formats fine on computer, unrecognized by phone

Hey, I have an 8gb Kingston SD card (class 4). When I stick it into the computer to format it, all goes well and the computer formats it with ease. I then stick it into my phone (Samsung Beat), only to have my phone say 'Unrecognised. Format?' I click yes to format and after a few seconds, I just get a message telling me that the formatting failed. Since this SD is new, I figured it may have been the phone that I just bought on eBay, so I decided to try my older 1gb SD card. This one works just fine, but it's only 1gb.

What's the deal here?
