I'm in the middle of trying to reformat a Laptop, and am using The family external HD to swap files. I don't exactly have horrid things I want to keep hidden, but I would like the ability to just throw my folders under a simple password to keep out the curious. Ive seen some options that encrypt and compress and then decompress. I don't really want anything like that, just a simple password required to open a folder and files inside.

You don't need to download anything, just follow the instructions on the site and you are good to go. Although you will have a file on your computed dedicated to decrypting the folder with files you want to keep protected. When you encrypt a folder, it automatically hides it and no one can see it but you after you enter your desired password.

How do you define "a simple password"? What do you believe to be too complex?

Overall, the more characters in the password and the mix of characters (letters, numbers, special characters) are the determining factor between simple and complex. Yet, it is very easy to create your own password algorithm that while complex when viewed by someone else, is truly simple. And not easily guessed.

All you need to do is to establish a password that cannot be easily guessed or discovered by some random guess (brute force) process.

Then, change the password every month or so.

And remember that you can further reduce the risks by simply shutting down and/or disconnecting the family external HD when not really needed.
