Funny thing... Of the four remaining Republican candidates for President, not one of them supports SOPA anywhere near like Mr. Smith does. The closest is arch-extremist Rick Santorum, who merely waffles on the subject. The other three? All three condemned it in the most recent debate, to varying degrees:
- Newt Gingrich outright called it as it was, describing SOPA as "censorship of the Internet on behalf of giant corporations' economic interest" and stated that it was "exactly the wrong thing to to."
- Mitt Romney described it as "far too intrusive, broad, expansive, and threatening to freedom," and recommended a far more narrow alternative.
- Ron Paul assumed most already knew his stance, and concurred with Gingrich and Romney.
- Rick Santorum merely went to say it "goes too far." Though against his case, he railed against the idea of "anything goes on the Internet."
[citation][nom]Lamar Smith, (R, TX-21)[/nom]Congress cannot stand by and do nothing while some of America’s most profitable and productive industries are under attack.[/citation]
This pretty much says it all, and reveals his true colors. Screw the economy, screw jobs, screw the greater benefit for the country or its people. It's more important to protect profits; it's very clear by the fact that he mentions "profitable" as the FIRST term used to describe such companies. (let alone the fact he mentioned it as an important descriptor at all)
By his same logic, cartels are GOOD because they make things more profitable. He's more interested in making sure economic dinosaurs get protected than the actual economy.
I would be very glad to see this piece of scum, above all others, defeated in his re-election bid this year.
