Trying to record through my usb mic

Im using a hp laptop trying to record i can hear music through my headphones but wont let me record through my usb mic, it will not pick up my voice for recording any suggestions please i hope i didnt waste my money

When you plug your USB mike, Windows should register it as another sound adapter. Check that this really happens, then select that sound adapter as default recording device.
