If I use a y splitter audio cable can I plug in two 5.1 speaker systems to my computer so I can utilize both of them simultaneously?

you would need more than one, but yeah.
5.1 will have 6 speakers meaning 6 paired wires or three cables from the PC to the first (FL,FR)(RL,RR)(C,SW)5.1 set, put a y on each of those and run to second set. done

Im planning on getting the logitech Z-906 and i wanted to use that in conjunction with the very old (but great) system i have now. The current thing i have only has one audio jack coming from a volume controller that i simply plug into my PC. Any idea if the Z-906 would have the same thing since it has a controller as well?

what system do you have now?
the new system will have the following inputs, information from maximumpc.com
"Six channel analog (three 1/8-inch analog stereo), three S/PDIF (two optical, one coaxial), two RCA analog stereo, and one 1/8-inch analog stereo"
the advice I have given would be for the six channel analog setup.

I have this old Altec Lansing system with two extra speakers i added from something else. I have pictures of it on this forum where i posted another question about it:

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/529835-need-help-getting-a-new-sub-woofer/

Any idea about the max volume when i use them in conjunction? will it be half as powerful than if i were to use one system without splitting the audio?
