VGA video + red/white audio but not at the same time

I'm hooking my laptop up to my LG HDTV. I got both aspects to work (audio/video) but I can only do one or the other. I have the video hooked up by VGA cable and the audio by red and white plugs. The video is fine when I change input to "VGA" but I have to change the setting to "Component 1" to hear it. Am I missing something or is this not possible? my laptop does not have an HDMI option.

You are connected to the wrong audio input. Check the back and see if you can find the right connectors. If not then check the TV setup menu. It may allow you to associate the audio input with the VGA video input.

Thanks for the reply. You are right. I had to use a 3.5mm male/male connector to get sound with video at the same time.
