what do i check first if audio cuts in and out no matter what volume but wont shut down like if something was overloading it?

You could have a defective audio cable, or a defective connection on the PC board, inside the computer. The plastic jacks sometimes break.
Most home computers have 2 audio outputs, front and rear. You might switch to the other one and try it again.
Laptops have 1 output...

He is right switch cables first to see if this is the problem.Could be the impedance
of the cables are to high for your system.
