What Hifi position on HDMI cables????

So my question is how can we measure differences where there are no differences ?

Correct me if I am wrong, a HDMI will transmit numerically the. Source to the destination and as it is numerically, no changes can be made during the transmition?

you need to be a bit more clear and specific in your question. i will attempt to answer based on what i could interpret...

-hdmi transmits information in a digital format (zeroes and ones... like a computer). digital is not as prone to signal distortion than analog types of connections. i suppose you could say this translates to less distortion between source and destination.

-hdmi has a high bandwidth so is capable of full 1080p video as well as uncompressed audio at the same time. this means that its capable of sending higher quality audio and video signals to your destination which would result in better sound and video.

-not all hdmi cables are equal. a $2 cable isnt equal to a $20 cable in some cases since it might not have shielding or may be made impropper. however, this does not mean a $200 hdmi cable is better than a $20 cable by a worthwhile margin. as long as it doesnt produce irregularities any hdmi cable will work. expensive cables are mostly a marketing ploy.

When talking digital it is ones and zeros but a cheap cable that is run to long will effect the ones and zeros. HDMI wise, 50ft (with a good quality cable)is about the max. Electrical interference can affect all cables, some are just better shielded and etc.

Now I cabled my house more than 10 years ago using coax and cat 6. This is an older house, a craftsman style farmhouse(built in 1932) and pulling the coax was a pain, the cat 6 not as much.

Now for short runs, a decent quality HDMI cable, should be fine or even cheap run of like 6ft or less should work good. I believe in a quality cable but the insane prices on super hi fi cables don't offer much in terms of performance/value. This site offers some nice cables from good to insane prices. Measuring the quality of HDMI cables will not be possible with a PC video card and monitor.

You will need a dedicated cable tester, that measures resistance, impedance, dB loss, crosstalk, isolation, etc. These are NOT cheap.

I use a MFJ-259 for coax cables used as antenna feed lines, but HDMI is WAY beyond my ($200) unit's capabilities.
