I have an old Dell inspiron 9100 with a 150w adapter--sometimes it gets too hot to the touch, I then will use a 65w adapter for back up until it cools....is this alright?

Solution
Is the 150w adapter the one that came with it? The lower power adapter, if it works, might only work in low power situations if the system needs more. For charging it would be fine. It wont damage the system but if it needs say 90w then it will pull from the battery instead of the adapter.

That's why it depends on how much power the laptop actually needs.
