What is the best way to color calibrate my new monitor?

I have a Viewsonic VP2770-LED that came factory pre-calibrated but I want to make it perfect now that it is in my room with my lighting. I was wondering if there is a free way to improve the color on my monitor that is decent, I've used windows 10's color calibration but it was confusing and when it came to the color calibration portion of the settings I didn't know if moving the slider was doing good or bad (kind of the same with the gamma brightness and contrast). Is there better software?

There is excellent software but it requires corresponding hardware. This becomes expensive, in the thousand-dollar range. Maybe someone besides me has heard of a software-and-eyeballs solution.
