What programming code and software needed to design and make video games?

I am buying Lightwave and possibly the low cost version of Maya.
I am learning more about the higher end 3D programs. Learned on a different in school.

What coding language and what software would I need to design and make video games? I am looking to make simple games to complex rpgs and other types.

Games are usually programmed in C/C++, Java or Flash (if it's a web-game).

For basic games you should start with Flash to get some experience, especially since starting with code directly isn't exactly easy. You can also try using free game designers out there, although I don't have much knowledge about these.
