Solution
Probably the backlight capacitors. I had a similar issue with a flat monior that started staying dark and only lit up after warming up, later as it got worse I noticed it had a dimm image in the dark display background, and later nothing... the control board capacitors for the backlight were bulged.


On this ifixit,com post it was the TV control board... they don't mention what component on the board but backlight capacitors are obvious.
