Hello Members, I thought I would find out who uses what to Display
their Laserdisc collection on? I still use my faithful 1998 Hitachi
55" 4:3 Analog TV. I still want to move to a 16:9 size screen but
really want to stick with a CRT. SO I though I would find out from
this group what they use or Prefer for Laserdisc viewing.

Why use composite out of the X9? By using composite you only use the
2D filter in the Iscan HD and bypass the X9's superior 3D filter. Have
you tried it both ways?

Equipment:

Pioneer HLD-X9, iScan HD+, Sampo SME-34WHD5 (16x9 HDTV, 34" CRT, 1080i & 720p
both displayed natively).

Settings:

My preference is to use composite from the HLD-X9 into the iScan HD+, then
DB-15/RGB from the iScan to TV.

Cables:

AudioQuest and VideoQuest all the way around.

Philips 9509. It has been replaced with the 9520 now by Philips.
It is a 32" 16:9 CRT.

Superior picture quality. I have never seen better anyways.
It is expensive. I gave about $1900 for it.

I use it with CLD-D925, LD-V4300D and DV-868AVi (DVD)

I was going to ask the same question. The 3D comb filter in the X9 is a
lot better than the 2D filter in the iScan-HD.

LD-S9 -> iScan-HD+ scaler -> NEC LT-240 DLP projector -> 6 foot wide
screen (variable aspect ratio)

The S-video looks unpleasantly grainy. Perhaps there is a configuration
problem elsewhere causing this effect. (I did set my TV sharpness to 0, which
I would assume is "off.") Or perhaps because 99% of my LD source material is
anime, 3D doesn't work well?

You should experiment with adjusting the comb filter and DNR settings.
On my LD-S9, I leave the comb filter set for 1 step above the mid-point.
Much higher than that and deeply saturated colors look blocky.

For DNR, I keep the Y setting very low and C around the mid-point.

Also make sure that the Sharpness setting in the iScan-HD (as well as
the one in the TV) is set for 0.

Display: Mitsubishi (NEC) PD-5030 (plasma)
LD player: Pioneer LD-S9
Receiver: SA-XR70S (plus APD-1)

The PD-5030 is great for HD signals which I have with cable, DVDs display
pretty well but can get blocky. The LaserDisc player can be setup so it
gives a picture that nearly competes with a DVD, but there are some short
comings. I noticed that Joshua says he uses a iscan HD+ and I wonder if
its worth its price? A big problem with the PD-5030 is displaying
widescreen LDs.. you basically get a narrow/squashed picture 8 or more
inches of black bars on top and bottom in standard viewing mode. The
PD-5030 has a stretch and an expand mode, which is useful, but it won't
fill the screen and it usually makes the blockiness more obvious. I
mentioned the receiver because it has an up-scaling feature .. however,
this doesn't mean you can take your S-video input and upscale .. it
actually only applies to the HDMI, but the sales literature won't tell
you that (though I didn't actually expect it to do so).


(PS, I'd like to say thanks to Nicolas (n$a) and Eddie (productstar) for
their help in getting me my new equipment. They're both great guys).

DVDO has a new model coming out soon called the VP30. Details are on
their web site. Its MSRP is a little higher than the HD+, but if you
preorder there's a discount.

A good scaler would help with this. The DVDOs have full aspect ratio
control that will let you zoom a non-anamorphic letterbox picture to
fill your screen with little drop in quality.

Joshua mentioned the DVDO VP30 .. I was just looking at that actually.
So it looks like it will take just about anything (audio and video)
and cram it into a single HDMI? In the digital audio section there
are four inputs (two coax, two optical) and one optical & coax out.
But the analogue input doesn't have an output .. I wonder if even
that gets passed through the HDMI? if so, that is perfect .. and
$200 off is cool.

Panasonic PT-AE700 LCD projector. It looks pretty good to me, even
though LD is much lower res than the projector. Good scaling and
deinterlacing in the projector.

Pioneer CLD-2950 and Pioneer CLD-D515.
Picture not great but the sound is awesome!

Also looking to get a new 16:9 CRT TV, possibly a Tosh or a Panny?
