What's with WinAmp?

I am Puzzled about something. Why does everyone seem to love WinAmp when Windows Media Player is perfectly fine and VLC is better in general than both of them? Far as I can see, its just a very bare bones, boring old MP3 player.

Sometimes you only need a light weight program instead of bloated software. Sometimes simple is better.

this i can understand, but people seem to be using it as a music manager like itunes. apparently some people seem to think it has better quality or something? basically, why is it so popular? it even looks ugly. i have tried it and it sucks. the interface is horrible. so whats with it?

Probably some people are using PCs long enough to remember the time when WinAmp was almost the only choice to play MP3s.
