WHY CANT I JUST DROP A MUSIC FILE INTO MY MP3 PLAYER?

Hello,

My wife bought a Sandisk MP3 player and cannot simply drop a music file from her computer to the player itself. I had thought the process was the same as moving any file from my computer to, say, a blank CD or USB drive, but I'm evidently wrong. Why must this process have an intermediate step--like using Windows Media Player--to work?

The file from the computer needs to be converted to MP3 first, a program like Sony sound forge is useful.

As long as you drop it in the right folder it should show up.
