Why doesn't my new memory card not work in my camera?

Hello,
I put a new memory card into my digital camera and it says,"memory card is unusable, insert new memory card". Why? The manual says it may need to be formatted. The camera won't give me the option. My camera is Kodak easyshare P880. The card isn't made by Kodak is this the reason?

You need to format it before you use.

If you already used it and saved data on the drive, then #Cherry0Elodie40 is right.

If it is brand new, no data, you can use disk management to format it.
