windows search index after restoring from system image

every time I restore from a system image, Windows seems to rebuild the index, which takes a long time.
Why does this happen, and is there a way to avoid it?
It doesn't seem to make a difference which program I use to perform the restore.

When you restore it changes files so windows has to rebuild the index to reflect the change in the file locations and what is present. It is normal for it to do this. The restore changes the files and settings but not the index, that's why it is having to rebuild the index. Only way you can get around it is turn the indexing off. Searches will take longer but doesn't really impact any thing else.
