If you do not have a displayport on the laptop, only hdmi, then there is no way to use a dp cable.
Even with a dp port on the laptop, the maximum refresh rate on the monitor will be determined by the graphics adapter use d in the laptop.

What is the make/model of your laptop?
There are many monitors that support hdmi.
Go to newegg monitors and filter on hdmi and you will get a bunch.
But, do not be impressed by 144hz. HDMI will not get you there and I doubt that your laptop graphics adapter is capable of putting out that frame rate anyway.
