Hello,

I am a software developer, and I am looking to buy a laptop to use at home and on the go. I plan on using it to learn a lot of new stuff as well. My programming would involve Android development, cloud development (AWS), simple back-end/front-end development, and that could change to be more cpu/gpu-intensive when I learn new things. I am deciding between 2 of the XPS 15 configurations and the soon-to-be released Dell Precision 7730.

Note that I will not be using the laptop for gaming. I have my desktop for that.

XPS 15 (9570) full-configuration

i9-8950HK, 32Gb DDR4 ram, 1Tb M.2 SSD, 4K 15.6" touchscreen, GTX 1050Ti

with discounts..$2557.79

XPS 15 (9570) i7-configuration

i7-8750H, 32Gb DDR4 ram, 1Tb M.2 SSD, 4K 15.6" touchscreen, GTX 1050Ti

with discounts..$2,249.09

or for my use, I should really get a mobile workstation, and wait for the Dell Precision 7730? Thoughts?

P.S. another concern is the XPS laptops do NOT have expandable storage, but I was thinking I could use an external drive for that.

Would really appreciate any input, thanks!

A great deal depends on factors you didn't mention. Do you have serious limits on how much you can spend? The XPS 15 is an excellent choice (and $250 off now on any configuration over $2000). I wouldn't buy the 7730 but would look instead at the 5530 which was just released two weeks ago. Excellent system for any amount of graphics work but it costs more for the same CPU and RAM as the XPS. It has faster M.2 SSD and uses the Nvidia Quadro P2000 w/4GB GDDDR5 instead of the Nvidia 1050 Ti.
You might also look at the new HP ZBook G5 models being released on June 27th. The ZBook Studio x360 is killer with a 600nits 4K display (Dell tops out at 400nits) and the folding form factor. But once again you would need serious cash to buy it.

Sure. They change your parts and/or machine for others that fails too!!! I'm speaking based on my experience with the XPS 15 9550.
