Astro A40 Mixamp Optical Converter

So recently I got an Astro Mixamp for my A40's and when setting up I realized it uses an optical cable. Unfortunately my PC's motherboard doesn't have a slot for one so I was wondering about buying an optical to 3.5mm jack converter. I was curious to know if they're worth it, do they make the sound quality any worse or will my headset still be 7.1 surround sound? I am pretty sure that your sound quality would be just fine and you can always return it if it does take away the 7.1 surround sound future although I doubt it does.
