Asus G75vx Microphone not working! Help!

Hello,

I recently tried to Skype, but the microphone doesnt seem to be working. On further inspection, the microphone is recognized by the device manager and does pick up sound (in multiple programs), but it is only a constant white noise, even if screaming or tapping the mic. What could be causing this? Asus RMA (yes, I tried) says it is a software fault and that I should use the CD to restore the laptop, but I lost the CD while moving houses!

Realtek HD audio is up-to-date according to the device manager and the ASUS website (latest: 22.8.13). Could uninstalling and re-installing Realtek HD audio fix it?
OS: Windows 8.1, upgraded from windows 8. Last time I used the mic was still in Windows 8, but a loooong time ago.

I forgot to add: on the ASUS website, the drivers are only available for windows 8 and not windows 8.1.
Re-installing Realtek HD audio (latest driver from the website) for Windows 8.0 did not help. D;
Any ideas? Or should I revert to Windows 8.0. Is this possible?
