We'd have a better topic here.. if the question was..
"what the worst, most expensive, POS on the market that I don't want to buy?"

People would have a field day with that one.

I have been using AVAST for close to two years and have seen it stop virii in their tracks. It also will perform a boot scan of your system before windows loads to get those really nasty lil buggers. It's free. I've also seen it update itself several times a day. It seems to be easy on the resources. It detects virii on web pages.

I tried most of the free ones and settled on this one as the one for me...once installed it is painless. Just remember, none of them will work if you don't use them, and that includes a system scan regularly.

Well, I think we just defeated the purpose of the guy's question... I think he gave up on it after the first 4-5 posts just moaning about the question.. heh.

Sorry for getting sidetracked. I've been using McAfee and it's very good but my subscription ended so I can't update it anymore. That's why I was asking for the best free antivirus because an antivirus is only as good as it last update.

Anyway here's the link to Avast:

I have been impressed with Panda software and intend on ordering a copy of their Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005. Cost some dough though but I do not mind spending money on good software.

If I was gonna spend $40-50 on an AV ... I'd buy Kaspersky Antivirus - they seem to consistently score best in comparatives ... but I'm cheap, so I use Avast! AV, Zone Alarm (gonna change that) and a router firewall ...

I'm not sure yet ... but lately ZA has caused way to many problems (hangs, freezes, etc). Maybe Kerio or Sygate ...

Zone Alarm completley crashed my XP machine beyond repair. All I did was install the software and reboot. As soon as the Windows logon displayed. I would blue screen. The people creating Zone Alarm have really let their software slide. Terrible coding if you ask me. I will never use Zone Alarm again. I liked Sygate's firewall. Never had a single problem with it. Panda's firewall/anti-virus has been working great also.

I've been using ZA Pro updated to 5.5.94.0 and have had no problems with my XP machine ever. I have the MS firewall disabled and I've been using AVAST AV for close to two years. Between those two, Spybot, and AdAware my machine stays clean.

If I was doing a fresh reinstall today, I'd use BitDefender AV (Free v8), Sygate Firewall (free), Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster & Spyware Guard, Ad-Aware SE and Microsoft Antispyware - all free. Free is good price for me.
