Can't make Media Player play through Speakers?

I have done all the troubleshooting I can do. My speakers are functional through volume tests, and are the only Playback Device under "Sound". The speakers play all Windows sounds perfectly and play perfectly when I am online. We are trying to watch a DVD using Windows Media Player, and all I get is silence..... I have fixed this in the past, but can not for the life of me remember how I did it. Please help! Thank you.

With windows media player running, open the speaker settings in the notification area and check if the app been mute.

Also check if WMP allows you to select the audio device. VLC does that.

Does your DVD movie has "Sound" options? May be it is configured for Surround
