I have a dell inspiron 17r se 7720 ,
Today the battery charge was around 7% and I tried plugin the power adapter .As soon as charger plugged in the machine went off and blue indicator light in the charger also went off.

I couldn't boot the laptop again both with and without charger.

I also tried removing the battery and tried still when I plug the charger the blue light goes off.

I tried the followings.

Removed battery
Pressed power button for about 60 sec.
Inserted the battery.
Tried power on without charger
And then with charger(again charger blue light goes off).
Still no luck :??:

...................................

I still didn't get a chance to test the laptop with another charger. Also I yet to test the charger with another laptop.... So I am not sure where the problem is.:??:

-------------------------------------------------
Is the mother board dead? :-(
Is there any other suggestions I can try?
-------------------------------------------------

I also need to know regarding the followings.
I bought this from US from a seller and I am in another country. I can see the warranty is remaining for another 2 or 3 months. But showing it as USA and not my country.
-------------------------------------------------
Should I transfer the service tag to my country through that USA seller if I want to claim this warranty in my country?
Is the motherboard failure comes under the warranty in case warranty country is not a problem?

What country are you using it in? USA use 120v mains outlet. Look at the charger and it will have an AC input voltage, make sure it matches the mains output you have.

Thanks for the reply.
No, it's not an issue with outlet, I have been using it for about 3 months. Output range matches with that of my country.
By the way I am using it from Sri Lanka.

Ok if the charger is plugged in without connecting to the laptop does the indicator on the charger light up? It sounds like an issue with the charger. If the light on it goes out when the laptop is connected then it sounds like an issue with the transformer in the charger itself. The only way to prove it is to either try another charger, try the suspect charger in another devise or use a multimeter on the output if you have access to one.

Charger lights up when I plug it into the power outlet and then when I plug it to the laptop the lights turns off.
After when I remove it from the laptop still the lights remains off. To light up the charger indicator again I have to plug it in the outlet again.

I am almost certain the fault is with the charger if thats the case. Your only option is to replace it with 1 that has the same output voltage and current. Dont get a universal (the one with the different plugs and voltage selector). Depending on your country in most places they are not to expensive and you can get them from most computer shops or online.

Ya, Thanks I don't mind buying a charger...
But I just wanted to make sure problem is in that.... and not in the laptop.

I will try to test the charger first in some others laptop soon and see.

I shown that to a technical show nearby. They said mother board failure. I didn't ask them to check the mother board by removing it because I need to make sure that I get the warranty through the official dell dealer.

I have initiated the dell warranty transfer/ownership transfer process online. It might take some time. If all goes fine and If I can get the warranty it would be life saver else I might have to suffer.

By the way anyone know what would be the rough price range of the mother board for this laptop?

I had the same issue. My dell laptop is 2 years old (Inspiron n5010). I contacted customer support and was told that the motherboard has to be replaced. I was also told that it will cost around 11000 Rs (around - 177 $) to replace the motherboard. This is excluding the technician's visiting charges. - so the total would have been around 180 - 182 dollars.

I had a local techinician check on the board. He told me that certain components of the board will need to be replaced and that it would cost around 3500 Rs (around 56 $) to get the board repaired. Needless to say that I got the board repaired by the technician.

However, let me explicitly say that I cannot claim any warranty for the components he has replaced. He has refused to give me any. He did say that this was the 5th Dell Laptop he had recevied this month and they all had the same problem.

So basically anyone suffering from this problem has two options:
1) Repair your laptop at a local technician(no warranty - but cheaper)
2) Replace the board via Dell Customer Support (you will get 1 year warranty).

The choice is yours.

Hi Vekool,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience.

Anyway finally I got warranty and ownership transferred to my country(after fighting for about 20 days) and I have given the laptop to the local dell partner to repair.Hope I can see my laptop in a working condition soon........

i also faced the same issue . I went to dell service center , they said that motherboard is gone and we have to replace it . The cost is 11000 + service charges . I said no and and came back to a local shop . The local guy looks genuine . He checked the motherboard and said that its not burn . No issue with mother board . He told that he need some time to find the actual issue . So i came back to office . He called me after 2-3 hours and said that some component and burn and it will cost 2500 . He fixed it and now its working perfectly fine (finger crossed) :)

The best solution is almost always to replace the motherboard. If you are unsure, you can test the cable with a different laptop of the same model. The adapter is turning itself off in response to a short. If it is under warranty, you should contact Dell directly. If not, then you should contact someone who can replace the motherboard safely (without risk of electrostatic discharge).

Some models have a separate adapter that goes between the charging plug and the motherboard. If you are able to test and replace that component first, it would be wise to do so. Replacing this component could be a much cheaper solution.
