Desktop to laptop hdmi in

I am planning to buy/make a high end desktop and buy an old alienware m17 (the one with hdmi in) and use the laptop as a monitor when i am in my dorm room.
Is that possible?

Sounds like the plan is to use the Alienware as a regular portable laptop when outside his dorm room, and only as a monitor when hooked up to a much more powerful desktop PC when in his dorm room. Can't carry around a monitor and use it as a laptop.

Please forgive my ignorance, as I've never heard of anyone doing this before. Remote access to what? Won't the HDMI input on the Alienware bypass everything and just allow the desktop PC to use the display of the laptop as a monitor?

AFAIK, direct video connection from computer to computer isn't possible unless you use some software like FreeZone.
