I don't use a "macrovision buster". I have a 5040 and I believe the
macrovision is built into the ReplayTV 5040. I simply connect my DVD player
to one of the inputs of the ReplayTV. I then do a manual record on the
ReplayTV.

You don't need the macrovision buster (and it won't help) to copy DVDs

No. You can get the files from a DVD (and there's software to undo the
CSS encryption most commercial DVDs have), but there is no way to
transfer the files to the Replay.
There's a free program called DVDshrink that'll let you copy DVDs to
your computer and play them there.
A digital copy would be nice, but there's always the big businesses
gettng in the way.

All I want is to store my DVD movies on the replay and play them off the
unit.
Will RTVTools encode the headers then save them on the unit that way? If
not, can I use the replay to record the steam?

You record the output of your DVD player into the Replay, the same way
you would into a VCR, for example.

RTVTools should allow you to convert the files, but there's still no
way to copy anything digital to the Replay. You can use DVArchive to
stream them.

What stream would that be? The Replay has no digital input (and can't
save digital streams). You can still record the analog stream (with
the expected loss of quality). Do you want some help with that?

I guess the best way is just to connect my DVD player and just record it
that way.

Is the a unit that does about the same thing as the ReplayTV/Tivo but with a
DVD and let me backup and play the DVD's on the hard drive? Network Media
Streaming would be nice too.
