External Monitor not working

Hello I have 2 Acer Aspire netbooks which I recently attempted to attach an external 22 inch monitor to both. One of the netbooks is loaded with Windows 7 and I have no problem with the external monitor. The netbook which is loaded with XP however will load windows and t appears on the external monitor but as soon as it loads the monitor shuts off. I have checked the display settings and the second monitor states not active. I need assistance please. Thank you!

Windows XP behaved strangely with external monitors if I remember correctly - there are FN keys (FN-6 of FN-4????) that allow for the monitor to be utilized....
