Hey all, need some help.
My girlfriend had an oldish laptop. Packard Bell Dot SE R410UK

Wanted to reset it to factory settings, and attempted this by doing the F12 > system restore/factory reset.

All was dandy, table popped up, left it be. Came back 20-30 minutes later to find that it failed to reset.
Restarted - Boot Failed.

Attempted to repair with the Startup Repair.
Error I got there was :

------------------------------
Boot Configuration is corrupt.

Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error Code = 0x490
Time Taken = 2806177 ms

------------------------------

After that I tried
BootRec.exe /fixmbr
in the cmd.

Guys, I'm out of tricks, anyone who came across this before please help.
And the lads with ''maybe will work fix''s aren't welcome :D

Solution
boot off with a windows 7 disk, follow the instructions, delete all partitions, make new partition & windows will make it's own 100meg partition, format the c: partition not the 100meg partition then continue the installation.

Do you have the Windows install disk? If so, why not just boot from the disk, go to Advanced Options and DELETE the partition then CREATE a new one and reinstall Windows... That should work.

bootup off the usb stick & follow the instructions but don't do a repair. it will show the partitions of the hard drive & maybe the usb stick, delete & make new partitions on the hard drive not usb stick then format the hard drive's c:partition. continue installation.

I've no idea what you're on about, I boot it off the usb and i can run cmd, and system hardware checks.
I need instructions on how to delete/create partitions.

Thanks,

I thought you had an installable copy of windows on that stick, sorry. try this as used it last week on a customer's computer.
At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SEL DIS 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CONVERT MBR
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Question
-

  • What happens if i just install new windows 7 ultimate, rather than repairing windows 7 starter boot files which are corrupt.

    Will the laptop still work?

How to check which partition has the boot files on it?
    diskpart>list volume

    gave me 4
    C - system rese
    D - Acer
    E - Pqservice (hidden)
F - Aivaras (my usb stick)
    *all are healthy

I don't care about the files on the laptop, I just want fresh windows. Since Reset didn't work from system recovery options.
