Graduate School Laptop

I am looking to get my fiance a laptop that will get her through graduate school (4 more years). Right now she has a laptop that she had for undergrad and it is just getting too old. She usually uses her laptop for basic school functions as well as other daily activities (i.e. emails, social media, etc.) I want to get her something nice that has 8GB of data, a long battery life, and will last her well into the future. I am looking at a budget around $500.00. Please help inform me of some of the best products on the market at this time for the price.
