HDTV resolution question

I am thinking of buying a Zenith 45” CRT Projection Television, HDTV
model R45W47. It has a built in ATSC and QAM tuners. I has 3:2 pulldown.
Nice unit but one spec worries me: The resolution is listed in the mfr
specs as 480p/1080i. It's my understanding that many stations are
transmitting 720p (progressive) instead of the 1080i(interlaced). Are
HDTV sets sold in the USA required to receive both 720p and 1080i? Will
this model detect and properly display 720p as well as 1080i?

I wouldn't worry about this. First of all, 1080i is still the most
popular boradcast standard. 720p is popular for sports centric networks
only at this point. It doesn't make much difference as the set will
convert both (so you;ll still be able to watch 720p content at 1080i/HD
so no worries)

The bigger thing I would be concerned with is the Zenith brand. I would
stay clear of their CRT rear projection models, last time I checked
them out (about six months ago) they had poor picture quality and their
overall build quality seemed pretty low too. When it comes to CRT RP
sets they're a low-end brand in the same category as RCA and Pillips
Magnavox, there's a reason these brands are so inexpensive (they are
the Daweoo and Hyundai of HDTVs!

Afrer going through the hassel of returning an RCA and a JVC set
myself, I'm offering this unsolicitied advise in your best interest (I
just hate seeing people get ripped off when spending that much money).
Consider spending an extra couple hundred and getting a Sony, Toshiba
or Hitachi 46" set. Just my $.02.

many HD sets only display in 480P or 1080i

they convert all other formats to these - so a 720P would be displayed as a
1080i with new lines created by interpolation or doubling.

The only issues come with the X-Box, where menu's are often in 480i and play
in 720P
some sets (like mine) can't convert the 480i to 480P.

It will convert 720p to 1080i. Sets are NOT required to display as native
format all 18 of the ATSC standards. MOST rear projection sets do exactly
what the Zenith does...up-convert.
BTW, only ABC, FOX and ESPN broadcast in 720p....the rest are 1080i.

I think the Toshiba and Hitachi are much better as well and probably not
that much more money.

Yes. Anything with a built in ATSC tuner MUST receive all 18 formats
of digital broadcasts.
