That mike was dead. Carson would occasionally hit it with the pencil he
played with. If that mike had been live, you'd know it!

The only sensible ones here are the auctioneers, probably on 15% + 10%, from
each premium
It's just another ordinary ugly mic which should have never have been in
shot anyway.

Besides, it was only one in a sequence of mics. He started with
the longer, slimmer, chrome-finish Shure ribbon model, didn't he?

I remember him with the SM33. Which, to be honest, is a really nice
ribbon and not just another ordinary ugly mike. I like the SM33 a lot.
Not ten thousand bucks worth, but at least a couple hundred bucks worth.

Wasn;t SOP then to have -the desk mic, -the OH boom and -a lav as options on
on the host?
Not sure about the lav as there WEREN'T invisible lavs then...

The 77 on Letterman's desk (does King still use one in shot?) is never
actually used except for cute Moments to prove it still works I think?

At least in the eighties, it was. I recall Penn and Teller splattering
Carson with water and his lav mike cut out. They went to just the SM33
on the desk (and maybe some boom) and the voice quality was very different.
Not bad but much less present.

Dunno, I haven't ever seen Letterman.

The 300 was a bidierectional
The 33 was a card (and not as nice sounding).
Then they redid the whole audio package (changing from SHURE to AKG) when
the network and the TONIGHT SHOW went stereo.

What did Steve Allen use?

It's just as well, I saw his Late Night show in recent years after
a about a decade of no TV, he's aging badly.
