hook up dvd recorder after installing digital box

Cox issued digital mini box to get HD tv. Installed mini box. Cable that was hooked up to recorder now goes to mini box. Cannot record programs. Can I use a splitter and connect cable to recorder and mini box?

If the recorder works when directly connected to the cable then you can split the cable and connect both it and the digital box. Make sure that the splitter has enough bandwidth to handle the digital signal. 2-3 ghz should be ok
