How to hook a JVC older model surround receiver to a newer LG TV?

We bought a digital optical cable as suggested on another thread. Did not work.

On some TVs you have to turn the optical output on. the TV speakers off, and change the audio output type on the TV menu.
On some surround sound units you have to assign the optical connection to an input (such as video one) in the input set up menu.
