Unlock a memory card on a digital camera/Canon.How do you unlock when a card is locked

Is the card locked by a hardware switch or a software switch. If it is a hardware switch then you slide the switch on the SSD card. If it is a software lock then you must unlock it with the same program with which it was locked.
