So I opened up gmail in google chrome and i get an email from 'american express', i decide to click it and it was empty. The only stuff it had was that the subject said 'a' and the title was 'a'. I am 90% sure i am save from any viruses as i did not download or click on a link, can someone confirm that i am 100% safe.

Thank you,
Henry.

Hi,
Infection by email happens 3 ways:

1- open a file in attachment
2- Clicking on a link in the email
3- rarely but not impossible from an image in the email

If you did not open any attachment nor open a link you are most likely not infected.

In doubt, download jrt- adwcleaner and roguekiller and do a cleanup. (bleepingcomputer.com)

i did an anti-virus with kaspersky, malwarebyte(trial) and HitmanPro(trial), Kaspersky and malwarebyte said it was clear however HitmanPro detected some tracking cookies. I removed all cookies now

I did the adwcleaner and roguekiller and they detected random files so i removed them however i don't think they were viruses

Then you have an uncompromised system
