I'm planning on grabbing a new CPU and motherboard for Christmas (Probably water cooling kit too) So I was going to go for the i7-5820k right off the bat, I even had no problem shelling out more money for the x99 motherboard that I would need with it, however after also noticing I need ddr4 ram the price was looking very steep and that was not even including the water cooling. So lets say I got a 4790k and a z97 motherboard opposed to the 5820k how many years would it last me? Would it last at least 3 years at 4.5 GHz's without being outdated, if not then how would it compare to the i7-5820k at 4.5 GHz's on a x99 motherboard? I am using this set up for mostly gaming however I have been getting into some very light 3D modeling recently so who knows.

99% of users will never notice the difference between the 4790 and 5820.

IMHO - Heavy CPU workloads (and to a lesser extent quad graphic cards) is the only exception.

Personally I'd stay with the 4790 now save the money, and if need be look at selling the motherboard/ram/CPU in 2 years and upgrade at that point if you need the extra performance.

Don't get me wrong - there are advantages to the 5820 - but as you yourself are going a little wide eyed at the price - it is not for you.

FYI I have an i5-2500K at 4.4GHz and coming up on 3 years - I have NO interest in an upgrade to it. GPU maybe - but not the CPU.

Ok I guess I will go with the 4790k. In that case could anyone recommend me a z97 motherboard? Preferably one that is red and black so it matches my asus gtx 780.
