is my headset running 7.1 surround sound? tritton 720+

So the current setup for the headset to PC is optical cable in for sound from the box to motherboard, and a usb cable for power from usb port to the box again.

I was plugging in speakers yesterday with my headset on at the same time listening to music and I noticed when I plugged out the optical cable the sound kept going on as normal and that got me thinking, the headset hasn't been running in 7.1 the entire time?? here's what it says on the sound properties

my mobo is M5A99X evo r 2.0 and on the website it indicates it supports 7.1


so whats going on?

It is getting audio over USB. If Windows is configured to send 7.1 over that output then you should be fine. Either way it is only going to be simulated surround sound anyway.
