it is not showing that the mic is plugged in

just as the title says.....i bought a new headset whit a microphone and it is just not showing that it is even plugged in the sound output works fine but the sound input is just not showing...it is like it doesn't exist pls help it is not to the headset i bought two so far
It is a Windows 7 sistem, an older computer and a MS headset
